I don't buy it. Civilization, advanced society, luxury, and Starbucks are all very recent additions to modern living, which is a sliver in the tree of time. For most of human history, pure strength dictated everything. Pure physical dominance was all that mattered. When there is no society, (and thus no legal structure), to create balance of power, power is decided at the individual level. So for a long time, men didn't pretend to have the upper hand. Men did have the upper hand, because having the upper hand in that world was almost entirely a matter of physical supremacy.

We live in a different world today where people are protected by systems and laws, held accountable, and graded by more than their ability to go Hulk Smash.

I think there are some really funny narratives out there, mostly kept alive by people who are more interested in feelings than logic. In a primitive world men tend to have more power. Systems and justices limit physical power and create parity. This is literally why we have societies...to protect the weak and disenfranchised. And when I say weak I'm not denigrating women. I'm weak compared to a lot of men. I'm fucking smart, but physically I'm not going to challenge the ROCK. So we have to understand that strength and weakness is relativistic as well.
