I think lack of planning is a derogatory way of talking about exploration. You don't always need to know what's going to happen. Authors would do well to accept the discomfort of not knowing. Giving yourself the space and freedom to explore roads and dead ends is critical to growth. This is how you become that new author at the end. :)
