I think we discuss norms like we have ultimate control over them. Some we do. Many we don’t. At some point the conversation must move past desired norms to accepted reality, which, I think, is where Americans really lack. Encouraging people to stay out of dimly lit alleys at night isn’t approval of mugging and thievery, it’s objective acknowledgment that they exist.
