I’ve also noticed this.

…it goes down in word count. Also, it’s at this stage that I truly hunt down on the Show Don’t Tell. I tell a lot in my first drafts since I’m unsure which direction the story will take next, and I don’t want to commit too much effort if I end up deleting and replacing the whole thing in the end. And showing almost always takes up more space than telling.

I’ve also noticed this. In fact sometimes I’ll actually write “then this happens” in place of storytelling when I don’t have it properly fleshed out and return later.
