Listen, I don't like churches but this really makes no sense to me. You say you don't proselytize your atheism yet you want to "confront" the church on account of not being loving? I mean the Bible is kind of anti-homosexuality. Then again, the church has a convenient way of overlooking sex out of wedlock (but I digress). If you want the freedom to speak against churches and church doctrine, and to not practice a religion, then these people also have the right as an institution to refuse participation to people for their arbitrary reasons. And why would a person want to be a part of an institution that doesn't want them anyway? Also, not a big fan of sensationalism. I highly doubt the town sheriff is going to put a bullet in your head and bury you beneath the pews. If we're going to challenge institutions of religion let's at least be rational and balanced in our approach.
